Depression and other mood disorders are more than just feeling down—they’re serious mental health conditions that disrupt how you think, feel, and handle daily life. In Australia, these disorders affect millions, with depression being the most prevalent, impacting around 1 in 5 men over their lifetime. Unlike temporary sadness, depression involves persistent low mood, loss of interest in activities, and physical symptoms that can last weeks, months, or even years if untreated. Other mood disorders, like bipolar, involve extreme mood swings from highs (mania) to lows (depression), while conditions such as persistent depressive disorder (dysthymia) feature chronic, milder symptoms that linger for years.

For men, these disorders often present differently due to biological, social, and cultural factors. Societal pressures to “tough it out” can lead blokes to mask symptoms with anger, irritability, aggression, or risky behaviours like excessive drinking, gambling, or overworking, rather than expressing sadness or hopelessness. This “masked depression” makes it harder to spot and seek help, contributing to higher rates of substance abuse, relationship breakdowns, and tragically, suicide—where men account for over three-quarters of cases in Australia.
