Substance Use Disorder

My Specialties

Substance use disorder (SUD) is a chronic condition where the compulsive use of alcohol, drugs, or other substances disrupts daily life, health, and relationships, despite negative consequences. In Australia, SUD affects many, with men particularly vulnerable due to social pressures and coping styles with men three times more likely to engage in harmful drinking or drug use than women. For blokes, substances like alcohol, cannabis, or methamphetamine often become a way to manage stress, grief, or societal expectations of stoicism, but this can spiral into dependency, leading to physical health issues, relationship breakdowns, and heightened risks of anxiety, depression, or suicide (men account for 75% of suicide cases in Australia). At Know Yourself Psychology, we can work together to address your use of substances using evidence-based therapies free of judgement.
