Trauma occurs when a person experiences or witnesses an overwhelming event—such as abuse, violence, loss, or a life-threatening situation—that leaves lasting emotional, psychological, or physical effects. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a specific condition that can develop after trauma, marked by intrusive memories, avoidance, heightened arousal, and negative changes in mood or thinking. In Australia, around 12% of adults experience PTSD in their lifetime, with men often facing unique challenges due to societal expectations to “tough it out.” Trauma and PTSD can disrupt relationships, work, and self-identity, contributing to higher risks of depression (20% lifetime prevalence in men), substance use, or suicide. For blokes, symptoms may manifest as anger, risk-taking, or emotional numbness rather than overt distress, driven by cultural norms that discourage vulnerability.

For men, trauma and PTSD often stem from experiences like combat, workplace accidents, physical or sexual abuse, or personal losses. Symptoms include flashbacks, nightmares, hypervigilance (e.g., being constantly “on edge”), or withdrawing from mates and family. Physical signs like sleep issues, muscle tension, or fatigue are common, especially when men somaticize emotional pain.
